Juneteenth Officially Recognized as a Federal Holiday
WEB Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, has officially become a federal holiday in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 19, it commemorates the end of slavery in the country.
A Day of Liberation
WEB Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been signed two and a half years earlier. This proclamation declared that all slaves in the United States were free.
WEB The holiday has been observed by African Americans for generations, and it has also been known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, and Emancipation Day. It is a day to celebrate the end of slavery and the struggle for freedom and equality.
